I was not familiar with the Lincoln theater until I got there last night to see Edwin McCain. When you think of theater, you think of seating. There was none. It was a walll to wall standing room only, full of drunks. I love Edwin McCain. He is one of the most talented musicians in this country, but I will not go back the Lincoln theater to see him. He put on a spectacular show, I just wish the atmosphere had reflected that as well.

MOTHER'S FINEST...! People need to know about this! Those that don't understand need to be told just how huge this is. What a history MF has in Raleigh: from the '70's playing The Ice House where Charlie Goodnight's is now and the State Theatre that was on Dawson Str. to the Longbranch and now back to The Lincoln and a big thanks to them from bringing the most powerful ROCK/Soul Band in the Land to Raleigh. This will be worth inhaling two packs of second hand smoke to see. (HEY! How about a Christmas present: MAKE IT NON-SMOKING!) I'm going to buy some of these tickets and stuff some stockings for the Holidays...

I can't believe Yngwie Malmsteen has added Raleigh to his USA tour. We travelled 900 miles to see him perform at Freebird Live in Jacksonville Beach, Fla on Oct 26th and it was well worth the trip. We will be coming to Raleigh to see him perform again! Everyone should watch his new DVD Yngwie Malmsteen Conserto Suite for electric guitar and they would understand why he is one of the most complex artists they will ever have a chance to see in concert.

Ah, local band drama. Wah. Just goes to show, be careful on who you associate yourself with in this local music scene..oh, and the lincoln can say who can and cannot play in their club..because its THEIR CLUB. They don't have to let Direkt Frequency or anyone else play in their club if they don't want to. It is a privelage to play at someones establishment and if you abuse that privelage then its commen sense, you lose that privelage. Nuff Said.

would like to hear and see the derek trucks band at the lincoln again. its almost been a year since they played raleigh or the raleigh area(and longer since they performed at the lincoln). looks like they have a date open Friday 1/13 and they already will be kinda in the area(Maryland) on the next day on the 14th. here is the latest press release:
-----------------------------------------------------------
What a special guitarist. [Derek Trucks] does not waste a note. And his strange pastiche of musical influences - John Coltrane-Eric Clapton-Ali Akhbar Khan-Wes Montgomery -isn't just an impressive list of styles; it remains unified and in effect from beginning to end." - THE NEW YORK TIMES
On February 7, 2006, Columbia Records will release 'Songlines,' the first new recording by The Derek Trucks Band in nearly four years, and the first studio album to feature the full-throated, impassioned vocals of newest DTB member, Mike Mattison. 'Songlines' signals the DTB's arrival at a spiritual plateau after a decade long journey of musical discovery, and cements Trucks' reputation as one of the greatest guitarists of his generation. While 'Songlines' embraces the group's big-eared love of rock, jazz, blues, latin and world music, it is unquestionably their most cohesive album to date.
'Songlines'' features several originals written by the DTB and collaborator Jay Joyce - from the Hammond B3 groove of "I'll Find My Way" to Joyce's anthemic, fiery "Revolution" and the shimmering Trucks instrumental "Mahjoun." Elsewhere, traditional blues (a wickedly funky "Crow Jane" rendered in with a cutting falsetto by Mattison) mingle with the DTB's stirring, tent revival take on Roland Kirk's classic "Volunteered Slavery," and their epic reading of the Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn composition "Sahib Teri Bandi/Maki Madni," a song that swells from a delicate tone piece to a whirling dervish and back again.
'Songlines' takes its name from an Aboriginal tradition which claims the culture's totemic elders traveled the Australian continent literally singing their world into existence. In turn, the "songlines" they created became a map for finding one's way through life. Derek Trucks has followed his own songlines from a very early age. A professional, touring musician since the age of twelve, Trucks now spends over 300 days a year on the road with the DTB and the Allman Brothers Band. Now 26, Trucks is the youngest guitarist to place on Rolling Stone's recent "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" list. His unmistakable guitar sound and attack has been described alternately as "incendiary" (Wall Street Journal) and "melodic and erudite" (Entertainment Weekly), but it is always deeply, unmistakably his own.
The Derek Trucks Band will kick off the next leg of their never-ending tour November 11 at the Keswick Theater in Philadelphia. They play NYC's Town Hall on November 12.
THE DEREK TRUCKS BAND 'SONGLINES' TRACKLISTING:
1. Volunteered Slavery (Rahsaan Roland Kirk)
2. I'll Find My Way (Derek Trucks, Jay Joyce)
3. Crow Jane (trad.)
4. Sahib Teri Bandi / Maki Madni (Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan)
5. Chevrolet (Taj Mahal/Lonnie Young/Ed Young)
6. Sailing On (Toots Hibbert)
7. Revolution (Jay Joyce)
8. I'd Rather Be Blind, Crippled and Crazy (Darryl Carter/Charles
Hodges/O.V. Wright)
9. All I Do (Derek Trucks, Todd Smallie,Yonrico Scott, Kofi Burbridge, Mike
Mattison)
10. Mahjoun (Derek Trucks)
11. I Wish I Knew (Dick Dallas/Billy Taylor)
12. This Sky (Derek Trucks, Mike Mattison, Jay Joyce)

But if you happen to tell me you want to come backstage and you just happen to "steal it" when I'm not looking - well, I just couldn't stop you now could i? get up with me at the show or ask for dee and we'll go from there. we need peeps at this show - come on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please do something about this. I love your frickin' club, why let it be ruined by these hacks.

It would be nice to see more Reggae Artist being booked at Lincoln. It is hard to have to travel to neighboring states and not so neighboring states to see this rich culture. Luciano, Capelton, Sizzla were wonderful and the atmosphere was comfortable as well. It would be nice to have Sanchez, Richie Spice, Beanie Man, and of course Buju Banton thrown in the mix.

Hey, to whom it may concern,
I thought you would like to know that your link for Apetite For
Destruction`s website is not correct.
Yours is without the `e` in quite. It should be notquitEgnr.com. Anyway,
just thought I`d let you guys know.
PS. You should really try to get Hollyweird to play with them again-- last February that was amazing!
Respect!

IIRC, GWAR is banned for life from the city of Raleigh due to a performance years ago involving the sodomization of a Jesse Helms doll. Clubs can get into a bunch of trouble if they book GWAR.
TRANSIENT will be performing at Slim's (on Wilmington St-about four blocks north of the Lincoln) on Sat Nov 12. They put on a hell of a show at LBTS. They were slated to open for Appetite again down there, but unfortunately the club closed down.

To clear the air for everyone, the only ones to decide the fate of fho- is fho. there has been alot of heresay from everyone except!!!- fho. the truth of the matter is, nothing has been put to bed yet. we are still planning to record and archive our complete repertoire including some of our older stuff and some new stuff as we work out some details. there is talk going on of planning an upcoming show in the near future, but the details of that will be worked out as well in due time. the goal is for "all" of us to move on to bigger and better things and that is something the whole world has in common. and as long as there are enough people in the world to experience and appreciate good music, we will always have the desire to make a contribution and help bring it to the table. so, thanks to all the fans who support us and to all the clubs like the "lincoln theatre" who have had us and will continue to have us, and for all of your thoughts and concerns regarding this issue. please continue to visit fatheadotis.com for update info or just to show the love and say what's up!
sincerely,

As far as FHO goes with their breakup - it depends on which band member you ask. No one is saying "breakup", but at least one has said he is "moving on to other things". Take it for what its worth.
I hope they stay together, one of my favorite Raleigh bands ever!

"Good shows too bad the turn out wasn't better." I agree that a couple of those bands are indeed good band and were very entertaining that night, but why would anyone organize a benefit without bands that can draw big numbers?!? Isn't the purpose of a benefit to raise as much money as possible?! Seriously, I sometimes think, and I bet many would agree, that some bands play benefits because they think benefits are a backdoor into a venue they would never get booked into in the first place. There are some serious bands (that have many fans) who have connections to Kim and his family that I bet would have loved to play this show. Bands like The Bleeding Hearts, Strange, Patty Hurst Shifter, Sold, Cherry Valence, Jam Pain Society, Slave Machine.

The Lincoln Theatre is far from a national landmark. Say what you will about the Brewery, but it has a history of huge acts that have played there in the past.
The Lincoln Theatre doesn't have that kind of reputation.
In this area, the Cat's Cradle and the Brewery are the two clubs with a lot of history behind it. That isn't taking anything away from the Lincoln Theatre or any other club...but it is simply the way it is.
As for smoking in the club, I too would be quite happy if it were made into a non-smoking venue. I have been much happier to go to the Cat's Cradle since they became non-smoking, because frankly, when I leave a club like the Lincoln Theatre, I have trouble seeing for the next day because I am not used to the smoke.

USA - Wednesday, June 15, 2005 at 18:20:45 (EDT)
non-smoking at the lincoln? yeah right. the smoke and spilled beer are what makes it a "club". there are many other "Clubs" in the triangle that need more help than the lincoln. I wont name any "disco"'s, "branches", or "brew" houses in perticular, but there is much worse places to go. THE LINCOLN THEATRE IS A NATIONAL LANDMARK KNOWN FOR THE ENVIRONMENT!

Are non-smoking shoes ever booked? Any plans for improved ventilation? I went to a show (HR-in May) that had about 35 audience members and I felt like I inhaled a pack 2nd hand.

I been going to Lincoln to see jammin bands since i moved here, but was dissapointed in the way lincoln theatre handled the crowd for CLUTCH (2005). I beleive they were over the capacity on that one. Makes for a really BAD experience to your customers, not fair to CLUTCHs fans when you make for a bad show LINCOLN! Also there was a person on a platform I assume he had some sort of doctors note, I suggest finding a seperate area other than the public area for people like that, he took up lots of viewing room and space for FANS also i tripped over the platform you allowed him to stand on several times. Also not very fair to the fans. Make a seperate place for the handicapp for their safety and ours and fairness to EVERYONES enjoyment!!!

Yeah, like Iggy said - let's get Thrice here to the Lincoln. But lets leave The Know out of it. Not sure how that band even gets to play at any places at all. Though the new member is the best part of the band by far, its not enough to make up for the other members lack of musicianship.

Scott Larned, Dark Star Orchestra Keyboardist, 1969-2005
Scott Larned, the Dark Star Orchestra keyboardist and co-founder passed away due to heart failure yesterday afternoon. Larned抯 work on the Hammond organ as well as his gravelly vocals were particularly well suited for elciting the sounds of Grateful Dead keyboardist Brett Mydland. Larned, a former teacher, had an affable personality that endeared him to other musicians and DSO fans alike. The memorial service will remain private although details regarding a band-faciliated memorial will appear in the days to come on the Dark Star Orchestra web site.

To Nicole Davis. Sorry, I'm a day late and a dollar short. Just saw your post about the incorrect link. On the bright side, I'm going to put you + 2 on the guest list for our June 4th show for being so awesome. At least the (incorrect) link was to another kick arse band. I saw them with Appetite in Atlanta ( do I even need to say it? nah, everyone knows Appetite is the rock version of Bruce Lee pulling your heart out and showing it to you as you die-hardcore impressive). HollyWeird commanded that audience. Luther ( door guy) will hook you and your friends up. Speaking of that. What's with all the Luther hate? Not to take sides, but ya know..walk a mile...Ever been sober around a drunk? Imagine being sober around literally hundreds of self-important drunks..and you're obligated to "be nice". IMHO if you have a problem with him, you really shouldn't get drunk. Just my two cents.P.S. Lincoln Theatre Rocks! ( Except for the door guy, he's a poo-poo head). Take care. You should book Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers. The lead singer and drummer are from the former band The Refreshments ("Banditos"). Roger Clyne has been independent since 1999. Their latest CD received the following:
#1 - Top Internet Sales
#19 - Heatseekers (Top New Artist Albums)
#20 Top Independent Albums
#17 Music Video Sales
#18 Comprehensive Music Video Sales
Their first release was #1 internet sales an their second release was #3. I have had to travel to TN to see these guys because they haven't played around here. Their shows are full of rock and full of heart. I have been to a lot of concerts over the years, big and small, but I have to say the Peacemaker shows are one of my favorites.

I know this question probably gets asked so many times and that it must really annoy people but I really have to know. Are cameras allowed at shows? If so, is there a policy like 'No Flash' or anything like that? I've read all the posts made so far and I didn't see an answer. I don't want to cause any problems if I were to bring a camera. Thanks.

Did you know that Matt and Drew were actually star-crossed gay lovers when they were younger. Their parents didn't want it to go down like that so they moved them from each other. Now the two work together as a cover-up under assumed aliases just so they can hook up after work and toss each others salads.

Carbon Leaf was the real stuff. My god they rocked. All their stuff was great. The intro to American Tale was amazing. I just didn't get the opening band. Its was a college band that probably does well in the frats, but the whole Dave Matthews thing went out at least 5 years ago.
Bring back Carbon Leaf!

The Buffalo will start late - always have, always will - Take whatever the "official" start time at this venue is and add at least 30 minutes too it - They'll be short a band member as well, but they'll more than make up for it and the late start - Excellent venue to see a hard working band of honest, heartfelt, and road wear folk! Time to boogie!

That rag has lost all of its integrity.WHAT A JOKE!!!
it should have read 3 way tie Lincoln ,Pour House,Cats Cradle. That doush bag should spend more time appreciating what we got around here, instead of dogging it.That blow monkey should be fired.martin st. is a dump with shitty bands,if they have bands at all.

hey there,i just wanted to let yall know i no longer read the independent.the article on the best venue in the triangle pissed me off soo much(as i am sure it did you as well)who ever the jackass that wrote it should be fired.to say that the martin st.music hall is even at the same level as the lincoln, the pour house or the cradle is a joke.what did they have 10 shows last year(i attended the randle bramlet show and there was 10 people there half of which probally worked there)your shows are usually sold out or close to,you have many national acts and most are the only nc apperances.the same with the cradle.the pour house has live music every single night, alot of the sun, mon, tues shows are free, with national acts on wed, thurs, fri, and sat there line up gets better and better every month.for one of the 3 of these venues not to be chosen for this is just ridiculous.the only award the martin st. music hall should recive is venue most likely to see a patron or employee doin blow in the rest room.if it wasent the only rag in town i would tell you the cradle and the pour house to pull your ads.as an a client of the independent i would ask them to fire that asshole.

G, Maybe they had an off night. I had heard they weren;t the band tey once were and was surpirsed to hear they were headlining the Lincoln that night. I'm wish the Lincoln would have had more rocking bands that night, some of the better local bands even like Parmalee, Nathan Asher, The Clear, Sold, Melbourne or Runaway Cab. I didn't go to the NYE show (saw Hobex instead - which was great as always), but heard similar comments from those who did.

Saw "Keep On The Sunny Side" and loved it. The very first play, "Close Harmony" starring Buddy Rogers and Nancy Carroll on july 1, 1929. Would you be interested in purchasing an original autograph of Buddy Rogers, Mary Pickford, and Barbara ?. My mom got the autographs in 1939. Mom is deceased now, and these belong to me.

That 96 rock ticket giveaway is total crap. I go to college in Elon and I can't even pick up the radio station to listen to it in my dorm, so how the heck can I win tickets?? I only got to see Breaking Benjamin play a short set when they opened for Evanescence in Charlotte and they kicked ass. I was really hoping for a chance to see them play the songs you don't hear on the radio and to see them do that in a more intimate venue. Thanks to 96 rock, that chance will pass me by.

I don't know what it is about the new album. It could be that I have grown older, and Helmet isn't really a band that appeals to me as much with their new material. The old stuff has a nostalgic appeal to it, and everytime I listen to Betty, Aftertaste, Meantime, etc. I remember all of the good times I had while listening to those albums.

Helmet was fun. Paige was more interactive with the crowd than I expected. I was happy to see that they played a lot of the older stuff, and most of the new stuff came across fine live. I didn't introduce myself to the "door guy", but I will say that the people working the door were extremely nice...so maybe I have just caught them at bad times in the past.

HELMET TONIGHT!
Hopefully they will stick to the old stuff, and not bother with the songs from their new album, which I was disspointed with.

I was wondering if anyone saw the new Dave Matthews Tribute band this past weekend. Were they as good as the advertisements for the band. I would like to know how they are since they are coming to a city close to us and I was going to check them out. Hope you can help me. I saw their website and the vocals weren't that good. The tempo was a little different than the original. Well, I guess that is my comment or might I say question.

It certainly seems that way, doesn't it Beth? Luckily, I'm not a fan of Breaking Benjamin, so for once I will not be screwed by the 96 Rock promotional show.

Pat, please look into booking Something Corporate on their headlining tour in January. It'll sell out for sure!

Hey, I've actually never been to the Lincoln Theater, but I want to make a band request. Please try to get Vertical Horizon to come back to Raleigh!! I also love Will Hoge, but I had to work the night that they were here. :( And, I have one question. On the Breaking Benjamin website, they have a tour date here on 12/16, but it's not on your band schedule. Are they really coming??? Look forward to seein y'all soon!

I have a question if anyone knows it please email me @ carebear9288@yahoo.com! On the Breaking Benjamin website it says that they are scheduled to have a concert December 16, 2004 @ the Lincoln Theatre. On this site it says that they are not coming to Lincoln Theatre and are not performing. Could anyone please email me back and tell me which is right? Thank you!!!!

Why would the Lincoln Theatre want to bring back a band that only brought 3 people to the club?
I can't say that I am terribly upset at the Raleigh scene when I cover/tribute band doesn't sell out shows. The less cover and tribute bands, the more original music.

(My first time at the Lincoln sober!!) Hate I couldn't see all the bands, but I have this stupid thing called a job!! Enjoying seeing everyone.

Please bring back the Rolling Stones Cover band Satisfaction, they were f*cking awesome. It's a damn shame only myself and two other people showed up for the show, especially when sh*tty cover bands sell out the lincoln all the time. I hope people will sack up and go the Helmet show. Raleigh is a f*cking joke
